Because of the current health crisis, many college students transitioned to distance learning with little to no preparation at all. It is challenging; that’s a given. But with the right attitude, you sure can be a successful online college student. And to make things a little smoother, here are a few tips to remember.
Like you, your professor is also nervous
Your professor feels nervous and anxious, too. Yes, you expect a lot because it may be your first time attending an online school, but don’t discount the chance that it may also the first time that your instructor would be teaching online. There would be some hiccups so just be patient and respectful of everyone in your class.
Be realistic with your expectations
If anyone had known that this pandemic would come, we could have prepared ahead. Professors could have laid down plans and groundwork for remote learning. But that wasn’t the case.
Everyone’s still adjusting to the new normal. You, your classmates, and your instructors all need to adapt to the changing environment. There will be boring slides and weird activities during your class. Participate fully no matter what; that’s how you gain more experience.
Plan ahead
Before the start of your semester, familiarize yourself with the software tool you will be using. Log in and do a couple of test runs. It will help you feel comfortable when you know how the virtual classroom looks like.
Know how to send private messages
Class discussion will most likely happen on chat rooms and discussion boards, where all of your classmates can read what you post. But sometimes, you may need to ask questions that only your professor could answer. Learning platforms usually have features that allow you to send private messages. Learn how to use this so you can post a question that only your professor can see.
